Abstract

Pain is a predictable effect post-surgery and currently remains a challenge to healthcare personnel, especially those in surgical wards. Uncontrolled pain delays recovery, prolongs hospital stay, impairs the quality of life of patient and causes increased risk of post-operative complications. This study aims to assess the knowledge and attitude among nurses in surgical wards in Hospital Miri. “Knowledge and Attitude Survey Regarding Pain” (KASRP) questionnaire developed by Ferrell and McCaffery (revised version 2014) administered to nurses in surgical wards with a return rate of 75%. The mean score achieved by the sample group was 51.7%, which is below the pass score of 80%. This study reflects the need to enforce continuing pain education among our nurses to effectively relieve patient’s suffering.
